If you want a great-looking lawn without spending every weekend pushing an old mower, a quality lawn mower could be exactly what you need. These essential yard tools make sense for any home, whether it’s a small city lot or a big country property.

These are serious performers with strong engines, sharp blades, easy height adjustments, and the ability to handle thick grass, wet conditions, and uneven ground.

It’s worth investing in one of the best lawn mowers, whether you cut grass every week or just when it gets too long. These modern machines are perfect when you need clean, even cuts without the hassle. They’re faster than push mowers, easier than strimmers, and much more reliable than that rusty mower in your garage.

We put a number of the top models through rigorous testing to bring you our top recommendations for the best lawn mowers.

After testing over 120 mowers, we discovered something surprising. Most models share identical brush motors, blade assemblies, and deck designs from the same factories. Yet prices vary wildly. Big brands charge £100 to £200 extra just for their logo.

We found one standout model using the same 3900 RPM motor and steel components as premium mowers, but at 40% less cost. How? They skip glossy marketing campaigns and celebrity endorsements. Instead, they invest in quality bearings and precision-balanced blades. Smart engineering beats fancy packaging every time.

What to Look For

We've found that 32-43 cm width offers the best balance. It's wide enough to finish quickly but narrow enough to navigate around flower beds and tight corners. Anything smaller takes forever on larger lawns.

After years of mowing, we know wraparound triggers beat single-button starts. Your hands can grip anywhere along the bar, switching positions when tired. Much more comfortable than stretching for one tiny button.

After countless mowing sessions, we recommend 25-35L capacity. Smaller boxes mean constant emptying, while huge ones get too heavy to lift when full. Clear sections help you see when it's time to empty.

We've learned the hard way that visible battery levels save massive frustration. Nothing worse than your mower dying halfway through the front lawn. Transparent covers or LED indicators prevent those awkward half-mowed lawns.

What to Avoid

We've tested mowers where you adjust each wheel separately. Total nightmare. After dealing with four separate levers, your hands hurt and heights never match. Central adjustment saves time and backache.

Small back wheels under 150mm (approx. 6 inches) get stuck constantly. We've pushed mowers through bumpy lawns, and those little wheels catch on everything. Larger rear wheels roll smoothly over uneven ground and turn corners better.

Non-folding handles make storage very difficult. We've struggled fitting rigid mowers in sheds and car boots. Plus, fixed-height handles strain your back if you're tall or short. Adjustable, foldable designs work for everyone.

Mowers without mulching waste free fertiliser. We've compared lawns using mulched vs collected clippings. Mulched lawns stay greener and need less feeding. Having both options gives flexibility for different grass conditions.

After extensive testing across multiple grass types and conditions, the Lawnora Cordless Lawn Mower stood out not just for its capabilities—but for how effortlessly it delivers them. This brushless, cordless powerhouse blends modern engineering with practical design in a way that punches well above its price range.

From the moment we unboxed it, the experience was seamless. Assembly took minutes. The foldable frame and lightweight body (far less bulky than comparable models) made it incredibly easy to store or transport. For anyone tight on space or moving the mower between properties, this is a game-changer.

Performance-wise, the 3900 r/min brushless motor is a clear highlight—it cut through thick fescue, ryegrass, and even slightly damp patches without a hitch. The 34cm cutting width gave us excellent coverage, and the 5-position height control (from 25mm to 65mm) adapted easily to every part of the lawn—from tight borders to open patches.

The transparent battery lid is a clever touch, allowing quick checks on battery status without guesswork. During endurance testing, we managed around 280m² on one charge, and the fast charger meant we were back on the lawn in under 45 minutes.

Comfort hasn’t been overlooked either. The ergonomic trigger handle reduced fatigue even during longer mowing sessions, and the larger rear wheels made navigating slopes and bumpy terrain surprisingly stable.

In a market where many cordless mowers come with compromises, the Lawnora Cordless  Lawn Mower delivers professional-level results with zero fuss. It’s quiet, compact, efficient—and frankly, a pleasure to use. If you’re after a mower that combines cutting-edge features with genuine day-to-day practicality, this is our top pick for UK homeowners in 2026.

We had high hopes for the HUSQVARNA LC 142i, given the brand’s solid reputation and premium pricing. But after extensive hands-on testing, this model didn’t quite meet expectations—especially when judged against more affordable competitors.

To its credit, this lawn mower includes a wide 42cm cutting deck, 7 height settings, and a well-designed ergonomic handle that made short sessions comfortable. The foldable design and 50L grass collector are practical touches, especially for storage and maintenance.

Unfortunately, the positives stop there.

In our battery endurance test, the LC 142i managed just 320m² on a single charge, far below the claimed 500m² coverage. Even with save mode activated, battery performance remained underwhelming. The Power Boost function, while promising on paper, drained the battery quickly without delivering noticeably stronger cutting power.

We also found the 17kg weight to be a challenge—especially on uneven or sloped terrain. Noise levels were on the high side too, reaching 95 dB(A) in our tests, louder than several budget-friendly models. Meanwhile, the ABS plastic deck lacked the sturdy feel you’d expect at this price point, and the assembly instructions were vague and time-consuming, taking over 40 minutes to complete.

In short, while the LC 142i lawn mower offers decent comfort and cutting range, it struggles to justify its premium price tag. Several lower-priced mowers deliver better performance, longer battery life, and easier handling, making this model hard to recommend unless you’re deeply loyal to the brand.

After testing the Makita DLM432PT2 on multiple lawns, we have mixed feelings about this 36V cordless lawn mower. The 43cm cutting width handled our test patches adequately, and the metal deck construction feels reassuringly robust—something Makita often gets right.

However, our battery endurance test was underwhelming. Despite using two 18V batteries in tandem, we barely managed 200 square metres before needing a recharge—disappointing for a mower in this price range.

In our noise assessment, the mower produced a measured 92 dB, which felt harsh during longer mowing sessions. We found ourselves reaching for ear protection, especially compared to quieter models like the Lawnora.

The 17.5kg weight made manoeuvring on slopes tiring, and after just 20 minutes, our arms were feeling it. While the 13-position height adjustment provides excellent range, switching between settings felt awkward and time-consuming than competing designs.

Overall, the DLM432PT2 does deliver solid build quality and respectable cutting capability, but the battery limitations, weight, and noise levels make it hard to justify the premium price. For users looking for a more balanced cordless experience, there are simpler and lighter options that offer better usability without compromising on results.

After testing the WOLF-Garten Ambition A370E for three months, we found it rather underwhelming for its premium price.

The 1600W motor struggled noticeably in our thick grass test, bogging down in patches over 10cm tall. We also measured a significant 30% power drop when cutting wet grass, which hampered performance further. The corded design proved incredibly frustrating in everyday use—we tangled the cable no fewer than four times per session, disrupting workflow.

During our coverage efficiency test, the 37cm cutting width took a full 45 minutes to mow an area that cordless models typically complete in around 30. The 3-position height adjustment felt restrictive and outdated compared to the more versatile 5-position systems commonly found today.

At 15kg, the lawn mower was tiring to push on slopes and uneven terrain. The plastic chassis creaked worryingly over bumps, raising concerns about long-term durability. On the positive side, we appreciated the quiet operation and the reliable electric start. The fabric grass bag performed decently in dry conditions but was less effective when damp.

Overall, for the price point, we expected a more powerful and user-friendly experience. The cable limitations and narrow cutting width make lawn care more tedious than necessary.
